Vacation or Staycation?

When summer arrives, everyone seems to be asking the same question: Should we book the vacation or enjoy a staycation? My answer? Both have their place.

I love the excitement of traveling to a new destination, experiencing different cultures, discovering local shops, and collecting inspiration that inevitably finds its way back into my home and my business. There’s something refreshing about stepping away from your daily routine and seeing the world through a different lens.

But if I’m being completely honest, there’s a different kind of joy that comes with a staycation.

To me, a staycation is an opportunity to appreciate the life we’ve worked so hard to create. It’s a chance to slow down, reconnect with our homes, and spend meaningful time supporting the local businesses and communities that make our neighborhoods special.

At Mishi Lifestyle, we often talk about creating spaces that invite you to linger. A staycation gives me the opportunity to do exactly that.

My three favorite staycation necessities are surprisingly simple.

1. Gardening

Nothing grounds me quite like spending time in the garden. Whether I'm planting seasonal flowers, tending to herbs, or simply pulling weeds, it's a reminder that beautiful things require patience and care. Watching something grow over time is one of life's greatest rewards.

2. Organizing and Purging What No Longer Serves Me

There’s something incredibly satisfying about creating room for what matters most. I enjoy opening closets, sorting through cabinets, and letting go of items that no longer fit my life or my style. A thoughtfully edited home feels lighter, calmer, and more intentional.

I often tell clients that designing a beautiful space isn't always about buying more—sometimes it's about appreciating what you already have and making room for what truly adds value.

3. Making Time for Friends and Family

The best moments of summer rarely happen on an itinerary. They happen around the dinner table, on the back patio, during an impromptu neighborhood gathering, or over coffee with someone you haven't seen in months.

A staycation reminds me that investing in relationships is just as important as investing in experiences.

Whether you're boarding a plane or simply opening your front door to welcome neighbors, summer is ultimately about connection. It's about creating memories, embracing slower mornings, and finding gratitude in the spaces we've built and the communities we call home.

So this year, don't feel pressured to choose one over the other. Take the vacation if your heart is calling you somewhere new—but don't underestimate the magic of staying home.

Sometimes the greatest luxury is having the time to enjoy the life that's already waiting for you.
